Career in Indian Army : Choosing to join Indian Army as a profession can potentially be the greatest reason for one’s pride and strength. By this year, Indian Army is considered to be the second largest army after Chinese Army and being part of such  patriotic rank proves that there is nothing like this profession.  Selections in the Army are not ever associated with caste or religion, they are done on the basis of one’s capabilities and determination.

There is no feeling greater than being the part of Indian Army and being able to serve your country. There is pride in the feeling that every family feels safe in their home because of you. There are so many other ways of joining Indian Army and all you need is some patriotism and academics in the service you wish to join. Now, let’s look at some ways to join Indian Army.

National Defence Academy (NDA): Selection and Recruitment 2023

NDA is the most renowned military school of India and it is well known for producing Junior Leaders for the Indian Army. It is located in Khadakwasla, Pune.

After finishing 12th, anyone can apply for the NDA exam that is conducted by the UPSC for selections in the academy. The recruitment is not limited for Army but it also recruits for Navy and Air Force. The exam is conducted twice a year, once in April and then in September.

If one has cracked NDA exam then they get selected for SSB (Service Selection Board) Interview which lasts for five days. After that, the candidate has to pass some medicals and if they get the correct merits then they can join National Defence Army.

NDA (National Defence Academy): TRAINING AND GRADUATION

The training in NDA lasts for three years which include six terms before a Cadet can graduate. In the Academy, Cadets from the three services – the Indian Army, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force – train together until after graduation when they are sent for further training before Permanent Commision.

Combined Defence Services (CDS): Selection and Recruitment

CDS is another exam conducted by UPSC. This is a national-level entrance exam that recruits the Cadets for Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy. It is also conducted twice a year, once in the month of February then in September.

Over 4 lakhs candidates appear for this exam every year and very few get selected. The selection includes a written examination and an interview. The written examination is objective and consists of questions related to general knowledge, english and maths. The candidate must be physically and mentally fit to appear for the examination and the interview.

CDS (Combined Defence Services): Eligibility

Nationality India, Bhutan and Nepal
Fitness Physical and Mental
Skills Reflexive decisions, fast problem solving, athletic, confident,etc
Age Military (19-24);  Air Force 19-24);  Navy (19-24);  Officers (19-25)
Qualifications Military: Graduation

Navy: Bachelor’s in Engineering

Air Force: Graduation {12th pass with Maths+Physics}

Officers: Graduation

 

Martial Status Military: Unmarried

Navy: Unmarried

Air Force: Married or Unmarried

Officers: Married or Unmarried

 

After passing this exam, the Cadets are sent to respective academies:

  • Army – IMA (Indian Military Academy) in Dehradun
  • Navy – INA (Indian Naval Academy) in Ezhimala, Kerala
  • Air Force – AFA (Air Force Academy) in Dundigal, Hyderabad
  • Officers – OTA (Officer’s Training Academy) in Chennai

Technical Graduate Course Entry (TGC Entry): What is it?

TGC is a special entry course that can help with joining the Indian Army without giving NDA or CDS exam. The students who have graduated from a Engineering degree are eligible to take this training course.

The students who get selected for the course are trained in IMA (Indian Military Academy), Dehradun and would be granted Permanent Commission if they successfully pass the course and work hard restlessly.

TGC (Training Graduate Course): Eligibility

Age 20-27 years
Qualification Engineering degree or in the last year of engineering
Nationality Indian only
Fitness Physical and Mental; free from disabilities
Martial Status Married/Unmarried
Duration of training 49 weeks

 

Judge Advocate General (JAG): What is it?

This is a branch in Indian Army held by generals who look after legal and judicial workings in the Army and it seeks selection of LLB graduates every year. It is a special entry for the students who have graduated from law and this entry grants you a Short Commission Service. The training that lasts for 49 weeks is held at OTA (Officers Training Academy). While the training goes on, you are not allowed to leave the academy.

Age 21-27 years
Qualification LLB graduate
Nationality Indian
Fitness Physical and Mental
Martial Status Unmarried
Duration of training 49 weeks

 

The trainee after completing the training will be given the title of Lieutenant JAG and further achievements may lead you to becoming the Major General in JAG department of the Army. The candidates should be registered with the Bar Council of India/State.
